Cllr Joe Whelan used the occasion of his last address as cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council to pay tribute to the former councillors who lost their seats in the local elections earlier this month.

Just under 100 people a day are being treated in the accident and emergency unit of the regional hospital in Mullingar, more than are treated in either Tullamore or Portlaoise, it was revealed at the first meeting of the new county council in Mullingar last week (September 7).

Following months of discussion, culminating in an intense two-hour debate at Monday’s meeting, local councillors voted this week to discontinue Westmeath County Council’s involvement in waste collection services in the county.
